At 17 Rue des Postes in Aubervilliers, a historic building long housed a maternal and infant health centre (PMI). A fire in 2012 interrupted its original function, and a planned conversion into private housing never came to fruition. Since then, the space has been occupied by artist collectives. Today, though its original function is now obsolete, the memory of its past use and defining events persists, inscribed in the materials and structure of the architecture.
Upon entering, the temporary states of the space — degradation, wear, and repair — are juxtaposed with the bodily sensations it provokes: chaos and order, dilapidation and an almost feral vitality coexist within the same space. It is through this juxtaposition that the site ceases to be a mere backdrop and becomes the starting point for intervention — to which the exhibition responds.
The artists are invited to establish, within a single day, connections with the site based on their perception of the building. Through direct intervention on the materiality and perceptual structure of the site, performances, workshops, and installations unfold simultaneously, entering into a constantly evolving sensory system with the space. The site and the works continuously rewrite each other in action. The site is not activated in a unidirectional way, but reapprehended through the convergence of bodies, materials, and time. The presence and participation of the public become indispensable elements in the genesis of the works.
In this process, the traces and outcomes of the performances and workshops remain in the space as an integral part of the work, interacting with future actions. The exhibition makes of this site a space that is both realized in the instant and in perpetual becoming — floating between history and the everyday — revealing the latent potential of temporary spaces in contemporary artistic practices and in urban social space.
