Artistic production is never confined to the studio, nor does it stem from a fixed identity: it is equally shaped by the social relations artists move through — schools, institutions, companies. Each position held defines a person's authority and visibility, and this room for manoeuvre shifts as they do.
where is art produced? asks how artists enter these positions, occupy them, or reorganise them. Through role-play, investigation, spatial construction, or testimony, they introduce mechanisms drawn from finance, law, or education. Rather than representing these roles, the works put their rules to the test: who is entitled to own, and who to be registered; who has the right to speak, and on what evidence a judgment is grounded.
Mona Young-eun Kim constructs contradictory testimonies: the viewer becomes a juror, required to decide what to ground their belief in; Elouan Le Bars stages corporate games in which participants take on the role of workers expected to display relentless engagement. Sara Noun revisits systems of school classification, an institutional imprint that persists long after school itself. Juliette George borrows the forms of banking documents to question how both art and money are constituted through belief and the attribution of value.
This shift transforms the very function of the artwork, which becomes a device exposing these rules to the public. The exhibition resists the simple model in which the artist proposes a view for the viewer to receive; instead, it sets a circulation in motion: social reality enters artistic practice, is reorganised there, and returns to the public, who judge and discuss it — roles that once seemed fixed become, once again, objects of debate and possible transformation.
The public programme on October 3 extends this movement: the questions of value and power raised by the works are replayed among the participants themselves, until they become matter to negotiate, not just observe.
